Simmons & Simmons has won the Legal Innovation in Dispute Resolution award at the FT Innovative Lawyer Awards 2010, held in London on 20 October.

The firm was recognised for its work in successfully advising Barclays Bank PLC in relation to long running overdraft charges litigation instigated by The Office of Fair Trading. Simmons & Simmons successfully defended Barclays Bank PLC, one of eight defendants, in bringing the case before the House of Lords in October 2009.

The Simmons & Simmons team was led by head of litigation, Colin Passmore, who said: ‘‘The litigation was a joint effort between eight banks and their in-house and external legal teams. We were all able to work effectively on constructing a model piece of litigation and were able to see it through in relatively swift terms.’’

‘‘It was an example of us working for the common good for our clients, and the co-operation took place on every level, including among the law firms and the barristers,’’ he added.
